"suspect wanting"
A want appears, then within a fraction of a second becomes a debate about whether it's allowed. The suspicion arrives before the wanting does, so you end up vaguely dissatisfied without knowing what you actually want.
For Type 1, desire is often filtered through the question of whether the wanting is allowed. Wanting things that are clearly virtuous — health, accomplishment, contribution — is permitted. Wanting things that aren't on the approved list — pleasure, ease, indulgence, attention — produces immediate suspicion. The 1 may not feel the want clearly because the suspicion arrives before the wanting does.
How it shows up
- "That would be nice, but..."
- "I shouldn't want that."
- A want appears, then instantly becomes a debate about whether it's appropriate
- Enjoyment converts mid-experience into "is this okay?"
- You choose the "reasonable" option before admitting what you actually wanted
- Pleasure feels easier when framed as useful, healthy, earned, or deserved
- Body: brief contraction at the moment of desire; quick redirection
- Difficulty answering "what do you want?" without filtering through "what should I want?"
The 1's desire is held in a permission framework. Wanting that passes the standards-check is allowed; wanting that doesn't is suppressed before the felt want fully arrives. The micro-moment to watch is the conversion: desire appears, then within a fraction of a second becomes a debate.
Worthiness Filter
Letting the suspect-wanting check happen automatically, before the desire is even felt clearly. *It feels like* discipline — not being run by appetites, maintaining standards. *It functions as* a foreclosure of clear contact with one's own wanting. The 1 ends up with a vague chronic dissatisfaction without ever knowing what they actually want.
Wanting is not the same as indulging. The want can be felt without being acted on.
Locate one specific want — small enough to actually meet — that the standards-check would normally suppress. Don't argue whether you should want it. Just feel the wanting, in the body, as a sensation. You don't have to do anything about it. The work is restoring access to the felt want, not changing your behavior.
