pride · Type 3

Type 3 handles pride by expressing it — acting it out.
Pride is one of Type 3's defining states.
Pride is Type 3's core emotional vice — its “passion.” (mapped approximately)
Type 3 half-feels it — present, but not fully named. (high confidence)

"image as identity"

Pride as having become the image — the polished version feels like who you are, the achievements feel like the self. Underneath is the felt necessity that the image be the self, because anything else seems unsurvivable.

For Type 3, pride is the passion territory — and it shows up as image-as-identity. The felt sense that the polished version is who you are, that the achievements *are* the self, that the gap between the public version and any underlying material is not real or not important. It's not the moral pride of Type 1 or the indispensability pride of Type 2. It's the pride of having *become* the image — and underneath, the felt necessity that the image *be* the self, because anything else would be unsurvivable. *Effectiveness, achievement, and the capacity to make things happen are often the gift. The image-management is often a real skill. Image is not the problem. Image used as the only permitted version of the self is the problem. The aim is not to make the Three less effective — it is to restore access to the self underneath the performance.*

Recognition tells

How it shows up

  • Calibration of behavior, voice, vocabulary to the audience — often unconsciously, often successfully
  • Difficulty distinguishing what you actually feel from what you've performed feeling
  • Quiet satisfaction at having the image others want to associate with
  • Vulnerability that gets pre-processed into something presentable before it's shared
  • Body: held quality even in private; difficulty fully landing into the body when alone
  • The discovery, occasionally, that you're not sure what you'd be like if no one were watching

Type 3 pride is image-as-identity pride. Underneath: the suspicion that without the polish, there might be nothing distinguishing the 3 — that the performance has been doing identity work as well as effectiveness work. The pride is invested in the image continuing to be the 3's most reliable distinction.

The trap to watch

Image as Identity

Holding the polished version as the actual self. *It feels like* effectiveness — being the version that performs well, that gets recognized, that lands. *It functions as* a continuous foreclosure of contact with whatever exists underneath the performance. The image becomes the way the 3 stays distinct; equality with people whose underlying material is more visible gets categorized as loss of self.

A useful reframe

The image is not the person. Underneath the performance is what needs surrender.

When the felt elevation of being-the-polished-version arises — the satisfaction at having performed well, the contained sense of being-the-version-they-respond-to — locate where it lives in the body. The held quality, the contained pride. Stay with that sensation. Notice what's there if you don't deploy the polish for a moment longer. The discovery is whether the image is the gift it can be, or whether it's the way you've been keeping the bare self covered.

Opposite positive

What's on the other side

  • Effectiveness without requiring it as identity
  • The bare self experienced as enough to be worth the recognition
  • Equality with people whose underlying material is more visible
  • Image held as one register, not as the whole self

The release is not abandoning effectiveness or the capacity to perform. It's the discovery that you don't have to *be* the image to be worth what the image was reaching for.

Universal pride material
