desire · Type 8

Type 8 handles desire by expressing it — acting it out.
Desire is one of Type 8's defining states.
Desire is Type 8's core emotional vice — its “passion.” (mapped approximately)
Type 8 usually feels it clearly. (high confidence)

"lust, intensity, excess"

Desire as the appetite for intensity — pushing limits, going to the edge, engagement at full volume. Lust here is broader than sex: it's the hunger for impact, driven by the sense that anything less than maximum isn't really living.

For Type 8, desire is the passion — but it shows up as intensity-seeking rather than ordinary wanting. The 8 wants to feel alive, to push against limits, to go to the edge. Lust here is broader than sexual: it's the appetite for impact, for sensation, for engagement at full volume. Underneath: the felt sense that anything less than maximum intensity isn't really living.

Recognition tells

How it shows up

  • "I want more." (often without specifying more of what)
  • Restlessness with anything moderate, considered, or measured
  • Pushing past natural stopping points — eating past full, drinking past wise, working past sustainable
  • Boredom that arrives quickly when intensity drops
  • Body: a felt forward-lean; appetite registered as urgency

Type 8 desire is the type's most familiar territory but also where the type most habitually overshoots. The intensity-seeking is real and often productive; it's also frequently the thing that costs the body, the relationships, and the long-term capacity. The 8 typically doesn't notice the cost until well after.

The trap to watch

Maximum Volume

Treating intensity itself as evidence of aliveness. *It feels like* fullness — the engine running, the body engaged, the world meeting you at scale. *It functions as* a continuous outward discharge that prevents the quieter signals from being heard. Subtler aliveness — rest, satisfaction, the body's natural rhythm — gets categorized as boring and pushed past.

A useful reframe

Intensity is not the same as aliveness. The body has signals at lower volumes.

Locate a moment when you've pushed past the natural stopping point. The body usually knows before the mind does. Stay with the moment of "enough" — the felt signal that more would be too much. Don't fight it. Don't justify continuing. The signal isn't smallness; it's the body's own intelligence that the 8's machinery has learned to override. Releasing the override is the work.

Opposite positive

What's on the other side

  • Sustained engagement without the overshooting
  • Aliveness at multiple volumes — not just maximum
  • Satisfaction that doesn't require more
  • The body's intelligence restored as a partner
